Legends of an Urban Scream
As more and more of the guests at the lodge go missing or are discovered murdered, the survivors convene to try to figure out what's happening. Sheryl, convinved that her boyfriend Jerry has been killed, becomes increasingly paranoid about her fellow guests, all of whom are behaving as though being stalked by a serial killer is a perfectly normal occurance. Sheryl tells them they are "all crazy" and retreats back to her cabin to hide...
EXT. LODGE - DUSK
Sheryl runs from the Lodge, looking about frantically, and heads for her cabin a little ways up the hill. The sun is setting, the world growing dark.
INT. SHERYL'S CABIN - DUSK
Sheryl enters her Cabin quickly, and locks the door behind her. She carries the knife in one hand, and the brown package from Patty’s room under her arm. She drops both on the floor, and quickly locks the door. Then without looking out the windows she closes the blinds.
She stands still and centers herself for a moment – she is quite scared. She looks at the knife in her hands, and makes few practice slashes in the air. She then picks up the brown paper package and sits down on the bed.
THE PACKAGE
As Sheryl unwraps it and peers inside.
Her eyes go wide with terror. She pulls out TWO LOCKS OF HAIR. One gray, one grayish brown. The Gray lock is labeled “STACEY’S FATHER.” The Brown one is labeled “STACEY’S MOTHER.” And then she pulls out a note on pink stationary: “REMEMBER ME, JERRY? I’LL HAVE YOU ONE WAY OR ANOTHER” and a red lipstick impression. She drops the contents, horrified.
She stands with determination and digs a cell phone out of her purse -HER CELL PHONE RINGS! SHE DROPS IT!
Sheryl just stares at it, not wanting to pick it up. She clutches her knife, and glances at the door. It rings once, twice, three times…
Sheryl grabs the phone.
SHERYL
Hello?
VOICE
Hello SHERYL!
SHERYL
Who is this please?
VOICE
Such an polite young lady!
SHERYL
I said who is this, ASSHOLE!
VOICE
If you want to CUT to the CHASE, that’s just fine.
SHERYL
You know what? I haven’t even watched “Scream” all the way through, so this is really pointless. Is this Jake?
VOICE
What’s you’re favorite scary movie Sheryl?
SHERYL
Well it wasn’t this one.
She hangs up. She sits down on the bed and tries to hold back tears.
THE PHONE RINGS! Sheryl picks it.
SHERYL
Look, I know you guys are having a blast toying with poor little, never-been-a-victim-before Sheryl, but this ISN’T FUCKING FUNNY, this shit is REAL and whoever you are I hope you’re watching your back!
WOMANS VOICE
Wow, you’ve got me pegged babe.
SHERYL
Who is this?
WOMANS VOICE
Jerry was great in bed, huh?
SHERYL
Tell me your name or I’ll hang up.
WOMANS VOICE
Are you SCARED, Sheryl?
SHERYL
Yes.
WOMANS VOICE
Good. I like fear.
SHERYL
FUCK you!
She is about to hang up the phone.
WOMANS VOICE
What’s in the PACKAGE, Sheryl?
SHERYL
How did you…?
WOMAN’S VOICE
Because I’m standing outside your door with a big knife, waiting for you to call my bluff…
SHERYL
Oh my God…
Sheryl stands and peeks through the peephole.
A DARK FIGURE STANDS ON THE OTHER SIDE, HOLDING A CELL PHONE.
WOMANS VOICE
But lets talks for a while first…
There is a beep. Sheryl has another call. She stares at the button dreamily.
WOMAN’S VOICE
What can we talk about? (Giggles) I know. What’s you’re favorite Urban Legend, Sheryl?
Sheryl hits the Call waiting button.
SHERYL
OH GOD HELP ME!
VOICE
If you EVER hang up on me AGAIN you little Bitch, I’ll CUT OFF—
SHERYL
JAKE, THIS ISN’T A JOKE, THE KILLER IS HERE OUTSIDE MY DOOR, AND I NEED HELP!
VOICE
(Laughing)
SHERYL
PLEASE!
VOICE
You’ve got me all wrong, Baby, I’m on the hill behind your cabin.
There is a beep. Sheryl has another call. She is sobbing. She stands and walks to the far window, and looks out. A DARK FIGURE STANDS ON THE HILL, HOLDING A CELL PHONE.
SHERYL
What the Fuck is going on…
VOICE
Well, you saw PART of “scream, didn’t you? We’re going to play a little game, if you lose, you die.
Sheryl runs to the door and peers outside. A DIFFERENT DARK FIGURE IS STILL ON THE PORCH.
VOICE
AND IF YOU WIN, YOU DIE!
Sheryl backs away and falls backward onto the bed, holding her knife out. THERE IS A SLOW KNOCK AT THE DOOR. Sheryl doesn’t know what to do. She HITS the Call waiting button.
SHERYL
You’re both FUCKING CRAZY!
VOICE
Who’s we?
(pause)
WOMANS VOICE
Who is this?
(pause)
VOICE
Sheryl?
SHERYL
I have three way calling.
WOMANS VOICE
I’ll slit your throat before he can save you.
VOICE
So you’re the one who killed the hikers…
WOMANS VOICE
What?
Sheryl is sitting on the floor, listening with morbid fascination.
EXTERIOR CABIN – NIGHT
The Dark Figure holding a cell phone emerges from the trees. He is wearing a trench-coat and a large, wide brimmed hat which covers his face. He stares across the hill at the cabin.
MAN (into phone)
I Seeeee you.
The other dark figure, who is dressed exactly the same except for the long blond hair that protrudes from her hat, walks off the porch and into the open.
WOMANS VOICE
Hey there big boy. What’s your favorite Urban Legend?
MAN
You’re a WOMAN.
ANGLE: THE WOMAN
WOMAN (into the phone)
Look pal, why don’t you go find somebody else to slay. Sheryl’s mine.
MAN’S VOICE
Why, did she kill your boyfriend in a horrible car crash?
INSIDE THE CABIN
Sheryl is clinging to the phone, listening to the conversation. She stands and peers out the window. The WOMAN is standing just outside, holding the phone in one hand and a large knife in the other.
WOMANS VOICE
I’m Glad you’ve seen my movie.
MANS VOICE
You’re playing a man’s game here, baby, seeing the right movie is only the beginning.
OUTSIDE
WOMAN
Well, I’ll bet I can GUT Sheryl before you can…
The WOMAN turns and runs to the cabin door.
Simultaneously, the man begins a DASH down the hill.
INSIDE THE CABIN
Sheryl’s eyes go wide. She runs to the far window, AS A GLOVED HAND SMASHES THE WINDOW BY THE DOOR. Sheryl pushes open the far window and pulls it open…
THE BROKEN WINDOW
The WOMAN is reaching into the broken window to unlatch the door. The MAN runs up and LOOMS behind her, RAISES HIS HOOK.
The Woman SPINS ABOUT AND STABS HIM IN THE SIDE. He SCREAMS and throws her to the ground, AGAIN RAISING HIS HOOK. She KICKS HIM, and he falls. She is already crawling away, turning, running into the dark. HE struggles up, slowly, due to the wound on his side. He can’t see where she went, but takes a few steps forward anyway. He stops. And turns back toward the cabin.
THE WOODS
The Woman is watching the man from the cover of darkness. She crosses around into another patch of trees.
She raises her phone.
WOMAN
Some killer you are.
He stops.
INSIDE THE CABIN
Sheryl has backed away from her escape window, and is watching through the hole in the broken window by the door. She notices the WOMAN standing to the left. She reaches up and turns out the lights, still holding the phone to her ear.
MAN’S VOICE
We’ll see who’s the better killer in about two minutes.
Sheryl watches the killer turn and begin walking toward her cabin, his boots crunching in the snow. Horrified, she glances back at the open window on the other side of the room. Then back out at the approaching killer, and the woman behind him in the trees.
SHERYL (into the phone)
She’s right behind you, to your left.
WOMAN'S VOICE
You bitch.
MANS VOICE
Thanks, Sheryl! I’ll be right back.
He turns and RUNS right at her. The WOMAN turns and runs off into the darkness. He follows. And now both are gone…
Sheryl stands in silence for a moment, and then once again stares out the window, trying to comprehend what just happened.
The man is running through the woods, knife drawn, following the Woman’s footsteps. Suddenly they come to a stop. He stands, looking about, frightened. He lifts the phone.
MAN
Where did you go, sweetheart?
WOMANS VOICE
I’m going to enjoy killing you.
INSIDE THE CABIN
Sheryl is still listening on the phone, wide eyed. She opens the door and peers outside.
MANS VOICE
Do I get to hear your motive?
WOMANS VOICE
I’ll tell you mine if you tell me yours.
MANS VOICE
There you are.
WOMANS VOICE
Shit.
MANS VOICE
Come down from there. We can talk about our favorite scary movies…
WOMANS VOICE
How about we just share our deep childhood trauma’s?
Through the phone comes the sound of breathing and branches rustling. Sheryl has walked out into the snow and stands looking at the darkness, absolutely fascinated…
