The play is intended to be staged as a simultansious mirror image, split down the middle of the stage.  All events happen simultaniously.  Actors are meant to be in perfect synch with the dialogue of their doubles across the stage - except when the dialogue differs.

Lights up slowly on a small den.  Coffee Table and three chairs.  Door left.  Mirror hanging Right.  Dim sounds of a wedding reception.

Victoria Enters left.  Looks at room.  Crosses to chairs.  Drops her purse, collapses and puts her face in her hands.  Turns and looks left,  back at the reception.  After a moment stands.  Crosses right to mirror, with purse.  Stares at herself questioningly.  Applies make-up.

After a moment, Aaron enters left.

AARON:  There you are.

Pause.  Aaron sits.  Victoria finishes her application before turning.

VICKY:  I just needed a moment.

AARON:  Should I leave you alone?

VICKY:  No.

She sits next to him.

AARON:  You look lovely.

VICKY:  That’s the idea.

AARON:  Listen, I’m sorry.

VICKY:  No, no, you were right.

AARON:  I didn’t mean for you to take it so seriously.

VICKY:  I’m not.

AARON:  Victoria, you’ve fled the wedding reception.

VICKY:  I just needed a moment.

AARON:  I’m sorry.  I don’t think you’re jealous.  I didn’t mean it.

Victoria stands.

VICKY:  You said it because it’s true.  Listen, I’m going to kiss Melissa goodbye and call a cab.

AARON:  We’ll all go.

VICKY:  No, Iris is having fun—

AARON:  so let her call a cab—

VICKY:  Aaron it’s my problem, I want to be alone, I don’t think talking to you is going to make it better.

He looks at her.  Crosses to her side.

AARON:  Vicky, I had no idea you were this upset.

She smiles at him sadly.  Suddenly her face breaks.  She covers her mouth with her fingers and turns away, trying to hold it in.

AARON:  Vicky…

He steps toward her, she backs off a little.  He embraces her.  At first she doesn’t respond.  Then, slowly, she buries her face in his shoulder to cry.  It only lasts a moment. And she smiles at him.

VICKY:  It isn’t you fault.

AARON:  I know.  You’re overreacting.  If you take off now you’ll just be proving me right.

VICKY:  I really am happy for her.

AARON:  So stay and be happy!

VICKY:  I don’t know what’s wrong with me, Aaron.  I didn’t think it would hit me like this.  I thought, Mel’s getting married, great, my first real wedding – she’s too young but it doesn’t matter.  Go Mel.

She looks at him.

VICKY:  And then when she kissed him all of a sudden I was getting too old and it did matter and I was losing her.

AARON:  Victoria, you’re twenty-six.   I have never heard you talk about Marriage before.

She shakes her head in confusion.  He takes her hand and sits her down again.

AARON:  You have nothing to worry about Vicky.

VICKY:  All I’m saying is that maybe I haven’t been facing certain things and maybe it’s time.

AARON:  Okay, maybe it’s time, that’s not a tragedy.

VICKY:  What do you mean you’ve never heard me talk about Marriage before?

AARON:  What?  I haven’t.

VICKY:  Where have you been for the last six years?

AARON:  New York, mostly.

VICKY:  Aaron!  The summer before senior year out on the meadow we sat on a blanket and talked about Marriage!

He looks at her, amazed.

AARON:  You remember that?

VICKY:  Of course I remember that.  That was one of the best conversations we ever had!

AARON:  Although unless my memory is going we talked about how we thought Marriage was stupid.

VICKY:  It was.

AARON:  Melissa is a traitor to the cause.

VICKY:  That was such a romantic evening.

AARON:  What?

VICKY:  Do you remember how warm it was?

AARON:  I remember the moon being full but I don’t think it was.

VICKY:  It wasn’t.  I think it was new.

AARON:  What do you mean “romantic evening?”

VICKY:  I don’t remember what we were talking about but all of a sudden you turned toward me and looked into my eyes and I was positive that you were going to Kiss me.

AARON:  If  I’d known you were thinking that I would have.

Victoria starts to laugh.  Then she sees the look in Aaron’s eyes and goes silent.  She stares at him, wide-eyed.  Aaron laughs softly.  Stands up.

AARON:  And then, five years later…

Victoria smiles, pondering.

VICKY:  My God, Aaron.  Can you imagine? How differently things would have been…

AARON:  I might now have gone to New York.

VICKY:  I might not have met Keith.

AARON:  You think it would have lasted that long?

VICKY:  What, three weeks?  Sure.  I met Keith on the first day of class.  You don’t think we would have made it three weeks?

Pause.

AARON:  All I’m saying is that if it was meant to be it would have happened.

She looks away, a little sadly.  Then back at him.  She smiles.  Stands.  Crosses to him and places her hand on his shoulder in gesture of friendship.

VICKY:  I love you Aaron.

He smiles.  Nods.

AARON:  I love you too.

Eyes.  For a moment neither knows what’s happening.  Aaron leans in ever so slightly, and stops, unsure of himself.  Rupture.

Victoria Kisses him.  She pulls back, trembling, looks into his eyes.  He is shocked.

AARON:  Vicky…

VICKY:  I had no idea.

He kisses her, softly.  She slowly wraps her arms around him.  Then stops.  Pulls away and rests her head against him.

VICKY:  How long Aaron?

AARON:  Always, I think.  I stopped paying attention to it a long time ago.

VICKY:  Why didn’t you ever do anything about it, you idiot?

He pulls her back and looks at her.

AARON:  I could ask you the same question!

VICKY:  I thought you were gay!

AARON:  You did not.

VICKY:  I thought I was gay!  It was Vassar!  I thought everybody was gay!

Aaron laughs.

AARON:  Maybe we were.

She smiles wide and he kisses her.  Again she stops. Turns and walks away from him.  Giggles.

VICKY:  This is ridiculous.

AARON:  A little, yeah.

VICKY:  Because you know, you’ve been like a brother to me.

AARON:  Listen, Vicky, I don’t want to—

VICKY:  No, I know.  It’s okay.  I trust us.

Aaron crosses to her.  Takes her hand.  Crosses to mirror.  Tidies himself.

AARON:  Well, Victoria, would you care to dance?

She stands.  Steps toward him.

Iris enters left.

IRIS:  There you are!  I was afraid you’d ditched me!

Victoria stares at him, hoping.  Turns away, as he leans in just a little more.  He stops.

AARON:  Vicky…

VICKY:  I doesn’t matter.

AARON:  Vicky, I’m sorry.

VICKY:  Forget it.  It doesn’t matter.

Pause.

VICKY:  Look, you have to promise me your not going to be offended that I’m calling a cab.

AARON:  Stay and talk to me.  Lets go for a walk.

VICKY:  Aaron, I’m getting that thing where it’s getting hard to breathe--

AARON:  All the more reason to get some fresh air--

VICKY:  Forget it!  I don’t want to be with you right now.  I’m sorry.

AARON:  So am I!  What are you doing?

VICKY:  I’m just not in a people mood right now.  If I hear another champagne glass tinkle I’m going to burst a capillary in my back!

Pause.

AARON:  Sweetheart, I think you’re overreacting.

VICKY:  This is ridiculous.

AARON:  A little, yeah.

VICKY:  Aaron, do me a favor and stop bearing witness to my wallowing.

AARON:  Wouldn’t you rather snap out of it?

VICKY:  Not tonight.  Look, just get out of here!  Why can’t you leave anything alone!

AARON:  Fine.

Aaron crosses curtly to the mirror.  Tidies himself.

AARON:  Don’t leave without saying goodbye.

VICKY:  I won’t.

Iris enters right.

IRIS:  There you are!  I was afraid you’d ditched me!
